Usage Information

Carefully follow the special meal plan. This is the most important part of controlling your condition, and is necessary if the medicine is to work properly. Also, exercise regularly and test for sugar in your blood or urine as directed.

Dosage

The dose of this medicine may differ for different patients. Actual dose depends on your medical condition and response to therapy. Follow doctor’s advice very carefully and take this drug exactly as suggested by your doctor. However, normal dosage for type 2 diabetes is - 1.25 mg of glyburide and 250 mg of metformin one or two times a day with meals. For patients previously treated with a sulfonylurea antidiabetic agent and/or metformin -, 2.5 mg of glyburide and 500 mg of metformin or 5 mg of glyburide and 500 mg of metformin two times a day, with the morning and evening meals.

Interactions

This medication should not be used with bosentan because very serious interactions may occur. Before using this medication, tell your doctor of all prescription and nonprescription medications you may use, especially of other diabetes drugs, aspirin, birth control pills, warfarin, diltiazem, chloramphenicol, clofibrate, corticosteroids, decongestants, estrogens, MAO inhibitors, rifampin.

Side Effects

Nausea, stomach upset, diarrhea, or weight gain may occur initially as your body adjusts to the medicine. If stomach symptoms recur later, tell your doctor immediately. A late recurrence of stomach symptoms may be due to lactic acidosis.

Some time, metformin in this combination medication can cause a condition called lactic acidosis, which can be fatal. Lactic acidosis is more likely to occur in patients who have: kidney or liver disease, excessive alcohol use, dehydration etc.
